January is National Mentoring month – a time set aside to promote youth mentorship in the United States. Shepherds is planning Mentor Appreciation nights later in the month at both high schools. Contact Amy Chickles at email@example.com for more information.
Shepherds Notre Dame of West Haven Senior, Angel Chavez participated in the largest “Harvest Pack” to date. As treasurer of the school’s Interact Club and president of CSMC (Christian Service Student Club), Angel worked with several other community organizations to feed Haiti’s poor. Read More.
Mentors and students from Kolbe Cathedral volunteered together for The Exchange Club of New Canaan’s Christmas Tree Sale. The club transforms Kiwanis Park into a Christmas village each year with over 1,200 trees including Fraser Firs and Balsams – as well as wreaths, roping, tree stands and other seasonal merchandise. Proceeds go to awareness and prevention of child abuse and many other local charities like Shepherds.
Congratulations to the recipients of Kolbe Cathedral High School’s “Work Hard & Be Nice” Students of the Month Award. The online fundraising site has allowed us to spread the word that thirty of our students cannot afford a Ti-84 graphing calculator, an essential standard for high school students preparing to go to college. Tammy Taylor and one of the students she’s mentored through Shepherds, Chiniki. Taylor lives in Darien, CT and has been part of the Shepherds program for 14 years as of September 2016.
Darien’s Tammy Taylor has been a mentor since 2002. As a Board Member, Tammy often addresses mentors and students. Her speech at Kolbe’s kickoff night celebrated our diversity and strength. “I see understanding and with understanding comes hope and slowly the differences between us begin to melt away.”
Last week four Shepherds freshmen and their mentors were welcomed at the Shepherds/KCHS Kick Off Night. These new students join the 39 other young men and women already enrolled at Kolbe Cathedral through Shepherds.
Five incoming Shepherds freshmen were introduced to their mentors at last month’s Back to School Night Dinner in the Maureen and George J. Collins ’58 Auditorium. We wish them and their mentors all the best during their four years as Green Knights.
Congratulations to the 23 Shepherds students who graduated from our partner schools this year! With hard work and the support these students received from their mentors and the Shepherds program, 100% of our students graduated from high school and were accepted to college.
